You can choose which strategy you would like to use, but use all of the different strategies at some stage.

Addition Strategy Revision
Today we revised the 3 key addition strategies. They are:
- Place Value Strategy
(Numbers are separated into the tens and ones)
Eg. 45 + 13 = (40 + 10) + (5 + 3)
= 50 + 8
= 58
- Advanced Place Value Strategy - Holding the biggest number
Or. 57 + 47 = 57 + 40 + 7
= 97 + 7
= 104
- Rounding and Compensating Strategy
(One of the numbers is rounded up or down to a ‘tidy ten’, an equal amount must then be taken away or added to the other number in the equation to balance it. NB: In addition problems you use two different actions addition/subtraction)
Eg. 63 + 59 = 62 + 60
-1 +1
= 122

3. Nicole made
another birthday cake using the same proportions of red and yellow beans.
There were 7 red beans. How many beans would there be altogether? How many
would be yellow?

Moana and Henri want a half of it each. What
fraction will they get?
Try solving the same problem using the beans

challenge tasks A, B, & C separately at each maths lesson to allow for
plenty of student discussion
Fractions Revision
Use your Mathletics booklet that we used in class to revise how fractions work. Jump onto the Mathletics website and do some more revision that way as well.
Then have a go at these problems. When you have finished, get someone at home to make up some similar problems for you.
Example:
You have 16 lollies in a bag. 1/4 are red. The rest are blue. How many blue lollies do you have?
Step 1: Read the question.
Step 2: List all of the key information you have from the problem.
- 16 lollies in total.
- 1/4 are red
- The rest are blue. (What fraction is that?)
Step 3: Figure out the missing information.
- If 1/4 are red and the rest are blue, then 3/4 must be blue.
Step 4: Write the maths equation that you are going to solve.
- 3/4 of 16 =?
Step 5: Solve the maths equation.
- 1/4 of 16 => 16 divided by 4 = 4.
So 3/4 => 4 x 3 = 12.
Step 6: Answer the question.
- There are 12 blue lollies.
Problems to try:
1. A farmer has 42 cows in a paddock. 3/7 are brown cows. The rest are black cows. How many black cows are in the paddock?
2. Sally orders 24 burgers at the fish 'n' chip shop. She orders 8 chicken burgers, the rest are fish burgers. What fraction are fish burgers?
3. Room 3 has 27 students. 6/9 are boys. How many girls are there?
